Problem: due to the brake problem, I drove the car into the garage in an emergency.
I was told that the rear brake was needed and the cost was about $150.
When I got back to the store, the cost soared to $280.
I told them I didn\'t have the money and the offer was only $150.
They kept my car because they didn\'t accept the check and I haven\'t had a car for two weeks because I can\'t afford to pay extra to get my car out of the garage.
I know you helped people like me so I was wondering if you could get the garage to release my car.
I am a single mother with two children who need school supplies and I can\'t afford the money and the car bill.
A: I will do what I can, but I want you to think about something first.
You say the garage doesn\'t accept your check and you can\'t get the car out because you don\'t have the money.
If the check was good that day, why didn\'t you go to the bank to pick up the money and pay the bill?
You can then write to me about the work you think you have done without your authorization.
So let\'s assume that you do have money in the bank when writing a car repair check, but since then, other more important things need you to get the money out.
Your garage does acknowledge that additional repairs have been made, but they claim that they are trying to contact you when they find that the car also needs a new rotor when they are trying to turn, but have not succeeded.
Because of this, they will reduce the bill to $200, which means that you will get most of the brake parts at cost.
They asked me to guarantee your check.
Something I can\'t do.
You have to pay cash to get your car back from the garage.
Question: I read your article with great interest and admire your handling of the issues raised to you;
I hope you can help me.
My wife has a 1986 Mercury Lynx that is not working yet.
In 2005, when the car passed the Clean Air test, something happened to the coolant liquid pump, causing a serious leak.
It took a while after the test was done to notice this, but that led us to put the Lynx cat in the garage and we haven\'t used it since then.
Basically the car is in good condition but the engine needs to be repaired.
What advice do you have on this?
Is it worth repairing?
I have not received a quote about this or we should (reluctantly)junk the car?
Thank you very much for your thoughtful comments.
A: I assume you are referring to the pump, using the word \"coolant liquid pump.
If it is not known whether the vehicle has a standard transmission, air conditioning or engine type, it is difficult to determine the cost of replacing the pump.
So let\'s start with the average cost of replacing the pump for this type of vehicle.
The labor cost of replacing this pump is between $250 and $300.
It\'s about $80, assuming you can find the pump.
Ford dealers are no longer available to pump;
However, Barton auto parts in Hamilton do have the products you need.
Is this car worth repairing?
It depends on how unwilling you are to throw it away.
Such a car is in good condition and is worth between $800 and $1,000.
So unless you are able to replace the pump yourself, you need to determine if the cost of repairing the pump is worth it.
I would suggest no, because replacing the pump might just be the beginning of something else that needs to be repaired, such as radiators, heater cores, thermostats and radiator hoses, all of which add up to exceed the value of the vehicle.
If the body of the car is in good condition, a mechanic or someone on the old car may be interested because they may need parts.
